מראה – Mirror: A Jewish Self-Reflection Kit

This project began as a personal need—a way to create sacred space, mark healing, and connect with the deep well of Jewish tradition through my own hands.

I call it מראה (Mirror) because it’s about self-reflection, healing, and the ongoing practice of blessing and protection.

Every object here is made with intention, research, and care, drawing from Jewish ritual, folklore, and my lived experience.

For me, magic is about making meaning. These aren’t objects that “make” things happen—their power comes from your attention, your story, and the way you use them as tools for spiritual or psychological work.

Each ingredient, symbol, and layer carries a story: where it came from, why it was chosen, and the tradition it’s rooted in.

This is a way of communicating with parts of ourselves that don’t always speak in words.

I’ve done my best to honor the spirit of Jewish tradition, while also allowing room for personal adaptation. The rituals here are old, but the practice is living and evolving.

Being invited into a process was how I first learned about magic. Making something with my own hands gave me a way in, and I wanted to offer that same experience to others.

Field Guide & Visitor Questions

Discover the stories, traditions, and creative process behind each ritual object and plant featured in this exhibit. Here you’ll find background on the materials, meanings, and inspirations for the collection, along with answers to common questions and guidance for thoughtful engagement.

1. What is the מראה (Mirror) Kit?

This kit is a hand-crafted collection of ritual objects inspired by Jewish mystical traditions. Each kit is designed to support self-reflection, blessing, and protection, and is made with care, intention, and respect for tradition.

2. What’s included in the kit?

Each kit contains a curated selection of ritual items for blessing and protection. All components are handmade and materials are chosen with care. (See the gallery below for details about each piece.)

3. What is the Protection Amulet?

The protection amulet is a separate, hand-crafted item containing herbs, crystals, and a Hebrew blessing, created as a stand-alone piece for personal use or gifting.

4. Are these objects “magical”?

Magic, in this context, is about making meaning and setting intention. The power of these objects comes from your attention, your story, and how you use them as tools for personal or spiritual work. They are not meant to “make” things happen magically, but to support your own healing, reflection, and growth.

5. How do I buy a kit or amulet?

To purchase, contact the synagogue office. All payments and pickups are handled directly through the synagogue. Just let them know if you’d like a blessing kit or a protection amulet.

No customizations are available at this time. To keep things simple for the synagogue and the art show, each kit and amulet is offered as-is, at a set price.

7. Who is the artist?

All kits and amulets are created by Rayne Ellycrys Benu. This project is part of the Calling All Artists 2025 exhibition.

8. What if I have more questions?

Feel free to email me directly with questions about the tradition, the creative process, or the meaning behind the objects. (Contact information is available below.)

Glossary

Every ingredient in this glossary has been researched, contemplated, and intentionally chosen for its resonance with Jewish tradition, ritual, and the evolving language of spiritual art.

Some entries are fully decoded, while others are still uploading—reflecting an ongoing process of study and refinement. As new data, insights, or ciphers are unlocked, this knowledge base will be updated and expanded.

Copper

Functions as the “red line” in the wire and to charge/create a small energy field and connect all the elements together. Connects with the angel Michael and the rose petals. A layer between the copper and the plants, as the connecting force of the amulet.

Tipped on the red rose petal for fire/Michael: "Copper, as a conductive metal, is linked to spiritual energy and the angel Michael’s fiery aspect."

Dried Orange Rinds

To remember to include those in our prosperity who are sometimes left on the outskirts (from Passover traditions), being open to see how everyone has a role in community and abundance.

Fenugreek

“Rubia” in Aramaic, eaten during Rosh Hashanah in some traditions to represent an increase in merits and blessings for the new year. Top Layer of Blessing Jar—forms the meadow the crystal grows towards the sun in.

Hyssop

“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean” — Psalm 51:7.

Used in rituals of healing and purification, used to protect the homes of Israelites in Egypt. A layer to cover the foundation with protection while supporting new growth.

Pine Buds

Being able to breathe, to put roots into the ground from a place of safety. Community and connection to a nourishing world.

Quartz Point (with Copper)

Purity and clarity, divine wisdom. The core of the protection amulet, programmed and blessed using Psalm 91. The copper wire could reflect the copper snake healing staves that Moses used, winding around the core of purity and divine clarity. Amplification/nervous system/represent self.

Rosemary

Remembrance and devotion, protection from spiritual, emotional, and mental harm and considered powerful for warding against the evil eye. A layer to cover the foundation with protection while supporting new growth.

Rue

Used for health and wellbeing, and to ward off the evil eye. Is considered a guardian of children, and protector.

Saffron

Divine connection and light, purity, delight, beauty, God’s provision.

Toasted Coconut

Sweetness in all moments of life, in celebration and when challenges or deprivation exist.
